Our Story

Nine decades of sound, innovation, and reinvention — from the workshops of Tokyo to the living rooms of India.

01
Chapter One

Born in Tokyo.
Built to Last.

1929 — 1991

AKAI 1929
1929 The Beginning

A Father, A Son, A Dream

In the heart of Tokyo, Masukichi Akai and his son Saburo Akai founded Akai Electric Company Ltd. What started as a humble workshop crafting radio components and electric motors would grow into one of the world's most respected electronics empires. The name AKAI — meaning "red" in Japanese — would come to symbolize passion, precision, and an unrelenting pursuit of perfection.

1954 The Sound Era Begins

The First Tape Recorder

AKAI launched its first commercial tape recorder — the AT-1. It was the beginning of an obsession with sound reproduction that would define the company for generations. In a world rebuilding itself after war, AKAI offered something rare: the ability to capture and replay memory itself.

The X'Field Revolution

AKAI perfected the X'Field cross-field recording head — a breakthrough that dramatically improved high-frequency audio capture on magnetic tape. Audiophiles across the globe took notice. AKAI was no longer just a company making equipment; it was writing the rules of how the world experienced sound.

1969 The GX Era

Heads That Never Wore Out

The year man walked on the moon, AKAI launched the legendary GX Glass and Crystal Ferrite recording head. Unlike conventional heads that degraded over time, GX heads were virtually indestructible — lasting a lifetime. The GX Series tape decks became icons of precision engineering, coveted by studios, broadcasters, and audiophiles worldwide.

The MPC60 Changes Music Forever

In collaboration with American genius Roger Linn, AKAI launched the MPC60 MIDI Production Center — retailing at $5,000 and redefining music production forever. Hip-hop, electronic music, and modern pop were built on the MPC's backbone. From Jay-Z to Kanye, from Dr. Dre to J Dilla — the AKAI fingerprint is on the soundtrack of a generation.

AKAI Meets India

Through a landmark distribution partnership with Baron International, AKAI made its first bold entry into the Indian market. In a landscape dominated by BPL, Videocon, and Onida, AKAI arrived as a disruptor — offering Japanese quality at prices that made Indian households stop and look twice.

1993 Market Disruption

0% to 20% in 18 Months

AKAI achieved what no brand had done in India's consumer electronics history — capturing over 14% market share in just 18 months. The legendary "Buy a 24-inch TV, get a 14-inch FREE" exchange offer swept through Indian cities, rewriting the rules of marketing forever.

As the global electronics landscape shifted dramatically at the turn of the millennium, AKAI underwent a global restructuring. The brand that had serenaded India with affordable dreams took a step back — not because the story was over, but because the best chapter was yet to be written.
